FAQ

Answers to the most common questions

Am I eligible to become a member?

If you’re currently a property owner on the mountain in Wintergreen (improved or unimproved) you’re eligible! Learn more here.

If you own property in the valley (Stoney Creek) you should check out the Wintergreen Valley Association here.

How much is membership?

Membership is $25 per year per household family. Learn more here.

Our property is owned by two or more families. Is one membership enough?

If you co-own your property with another family, they will need their own $25/year membership.

What does my membership fee cover?

Your membership gets you a complimentary copy of our annual printed members directory, keeps you on our email list for upcoming events, and helps us cover our operating costs, which include our website and other platform fees, directory printing costs, etc.

It also supports several annual WMA donations to local organizations like the Wintergreen Rescue and Wintergreen Fire capital campaigns, the Tye River Elementary NCPS Bookbus, and the Nelson County Community Development Foundation.

Do I need to have my information printed in the member directory?

Participation in the directory is entirely voluntary. But even if you opt out, you’ll still get a copy!

I’ve sold my property. Can I still be a member?

If your membership is current but you’re selling your property, you may continue to pay your annual membership and remain a member. Just don’t let it lapse! You’ll continue to receive the directory and emails and you’ll be able to attend events. But please note that you’ll no longer be a voting member.

Didn’t you used to be called the Homesteaders?

The organization was founded in 1991 as “Wintergreen Mountain Homesteaders Association, Inc.” (MHA).

In September 2022, members voted to simplify our “casual” name to Wintergreen Mountain Association (WMA) and you’ll see our new logo and simplified name in most of our communications. Our legal name remains Wintergreen Mountain Homesteaders Association, Inc.

Are my membership fee, donations to fundraising efforts, or the cost of event tickets tax deductible?

The Wintergreen Mountain Homesteaders Association, Inc. (our legal name) is registered as a 501(c)(7) non-stock corporation in Virginia. Donations, dues, and ticket prices are NOT tax deductible.
